A question of colour!

A question of colour!

Warm, cool, neutral… colour plays an important role in our daily lives and exerts a great influence over the atmosphere in a room.  Although there is no “right” or “wrong” choice, colour is essential in order to create balance.

Each colour has its own character: one colour will be suitable for the lounge whilst another will fit better in the kitchen, bedroom or bathroom. The symbolism that colour creates enables you to avoid falling into the trap of bad taste, but above all, it means that your home will exude a sense of harmony!

In the kitchen, aesthetics and functionality are the prime concern in order to get the best out of the space.  Yellow for example is warm and welcoming (think South of France), whereas pink is bright and on-trend (because it is unexpected and fresh). It is also popular to play with two or three colours, choosing a range of radically different yet complementary shades. For an ultra-modern kitchen, why not opt for a cool colour such as matte grey and combine it with flamboyant burgundy? But if you want a little more softness, you could choose a white theme with a taupe, turquoise or apple green wall; any bold combination can work! And if you like vivid colours such as red, electric blue or black, choose a white ceiling in order to make the room as light and luminous as possible.

Colour – yes but which one?

So how do you choose the colour or colours that will turn a kitchen into YOUR kitchen? Before starting to decorate in haste, take a sheet of A4 paper and put an example of all the fixed colours already found in the room on it (e.g. electrical goods, piping, white sink, chrome fittings, tiles etc.). Then make a list of colours (samples from shops or cut out from catalogues) and try out different combinations until you find one that suits you.
